I Corinthians 8-10, Psalm 77
Though I am free and belong to no one, I have made myself a slave to everyone, to win as many as possible. I Corinthians 9:19
Freedom is often misunderstood to mean I can do as I please. A better definition of freedom is that you have the right to make choices for how you will relate to those around you. A prisoner has no ability to define his/her impact on the world. The prisoner is confined. Jesus set you free from your slavery to sin. It is sin that separated you from God and those around you. Your freedom now enables you to live in community. Community calls for responsibility to others. As a follower of Jesus I want to use my freedom to help others experience the freedom that has been given to me. Does that make sense to you? In freedom, Jesus sacrificed his life to save me – and you. Perhaps the best definition is that freedom enables us to love.
