Some women were watching from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joseph, and Salome. In Galilee these women had followed him and cared for his needs. Many other women who had come up with him to Jerusalem were also there. Mark 15:40-41
Little is ever noted about the women who had followed Jesus, and served him, during his ministry. Mark tells us they were at the cross when he makes no mention of the men who had followed Jesus being there. Because I am not black I cannot understand the racial prejudice that shames our country. I am not a woman so I cannot understand the gender discrimination faced by women through history. I am a sinner, though, and I do grasp how Jesus embraces each of us with grace and dignity. The women at the cross saw that in his life and for that reason they were there to honor him in his death. May we all honor him who has no prejudice, but loves us all. AND may we learn from Jesus how to give dignity to each and every person.
