Allegiance Not Obedience

See, I set before you today life and prosperity, death and destruction. For I command you today to love the Lord your God, to walk in obedience to him, and to keep his commands, decrees and laws; then you will live and increase, and the Lord your God will bless you in the land you are entering to possess. Deuteronomy 30:15-16

Don’t be fooled into thinking this is about obedience. Blessing does not come because we jump through the right hoops. It is about allegiance. God gave them a choice of following him or following some other god. Moses made sure they understood that if they chose the path of some other god, they would fail. Nothing has changed. When we fail, we can confess that failure and God will forgive. The problem is when we choose to do as we please and somehow think there are no consequences for giving God third or fourth place in our lives rather than first. Thank God who has chosen to love us. Were it not for that, we would have no choice.
